The Dirty Dozen

The Environmental Working Group is a non-profit agency that funds research in environmental health.  Every year it posts a list of 12 vegetables and fruit that have a very high pesticide load.  This list can help health-conscious consumers choose food items carefully to protect their health.  Avoiding these top 12 (or buy them organically) can significantly ease your pesticide burden.   Here they are:

  1. peaches
  2. apples
  3. sweet bell peppers
  4. celery
  5. nectarine
  6. strawberries
  7. cherries
  8. kale
  9. lettuce
  10. grapes (imported)
  11. carrots
  12. pears

Beyond the yearly Dirty Dozen update,Environmental Working Group’s website is a rich source of info for making consumer choices. I have used it extensively to minimise toxins in our home particularly, recently, using the cosmetics data base to replace most of the consumables in the bathroom. Now I’m using it to shop for a low radiation emission cellphone.
